No vacation to Florida would be complete without seeing the natural splendor that is the Everglades. Known throughout the world the immense “river of grass” is a subtropical wetland that is home to hosts of reptiles, mammals and rare birds. The sluggish moving river of water flowing through South Florida gives rise to many varied ecosystems. The “river” is 50 miles wide and 6 inches to 3 feet deep. It flows at a rate of 100 feet per day throughout the wet season.
The Florida Everglades are abundant with wildlife. American Alligator, Manatees, Tree Snails, Cape Sable Seaside Sparrows, Wood Storks, Short Tailed Hawks, Snail kites, Peregrine Falcons, Smooth Billed Anis, Mangrove Cuckos and Bald Eagles and many non native species like monkeys, pythons and parrots that occupy the Florida Everglades. Possible no other animals embody the area’s biological assortment and array better than the birds. In any given year, as many as 257 species of birds may utilize the refuges diverse wetland habitats.
